About Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie is the world's best-known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare.
Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies.
Agatha Christie also wrote romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan.
Agatha Christie died in 1976.

阿嘉莎·克莉絲蒂(Agatha Christie，1890-1976)生於英格蘭的Devonshire。克莉絲蒂早年喪父，小時候並未受過正規教育，多靠母親的指導與自修來充實自己。24歲(1914)時，本名阿嘉莎·瑪麗·克那麗莎·米勒的克莉絲蒂嫁給了英國皇家空軍軍官阿奇坡·克莉絲蒂(ArchibaldChristie)後改姓夫姓。第一次大戰期間她曾加入醫療機構擔任護理工作，有機會接觸並認識各種毒藥的藥性，因而墊定了日後小說中對於藥性運用的基礎。在這段時間中，她時常與姐姐瑪姬一同閱讀偵探小說，並且一起討論討論其中的布局與情節，因而勾起了寫作的興趣，並且寫下了其第一本偵探小說《The Mysterious Affair at Styles》。不過當時曾遭多家出版商退稿(與柯南道爾當年的境遇一樣)，最後終於在1920問世。克莉絲蒂這一次的婚姻生活並不順利，1926年在發現其夫有婚外情，再加上其母過世的雙重打擊下，曾一度離奇失蹤。1928年，這次婚姻在維持了14年後終告結束，為了彌平婚變的傷痛，便只身到海外旅行。期間在西亞(土耳其、埃及等地)的經驗，提供了她《Murder on the Orient Express》、《Death on the Nile》 等名著的素材。1930年，在小亞細亞的旅途中與考古學家馬克斯·馬洛文(MaxMallowan)相識，並於同年九月結婚，從此夫唱婦隨，常伴夫婿至北非考古，婚姻生活順利。再婚後的克莉絲蒂則依然沿用前夫的姓為筆名，繼續她的文學的創作工作。1976年一月十二日，克莉絲蒂與世長辭。
克莉絲蒂偵探小說作品的數量各家說法不一，著名的角色則以赫丘裡．白羅(Hercule Poirot) 與珍·瑪波(Miss Jane Marple) 最為著名，另外湯米與杜本絲夫婦 (Tommy and Tuppenece)也是幾篇長篇小說的主角。角色若是能鮮活有人性，似乎都免不了地是脫胎於現實生活中，白羅與瑪波也是同樣的情形。白羅，取材自其鄰居，一位逃避戰亂的比利時難民。這位外國鄰人的外型及言語舉止，塑造了白羅特殊的風格。然而，當白羅的探案開始隨著時日逐漸累加時，克莉絲蒂顯然意識到當初將白羅的年齡定位得太老了，白羅能夠活躍於其作品的時日顯然不太可能太長。因此，自1930 年起，克莉絲蒂也以一位常與其母親喝茶聊天的老太太為原型，設定了另一位風格迥異的主角—瑪波小姐。在克莉絲蒂的長篇小說中，幾乎可以說完全是這兩位名探的天下。正如同柯南道爾的作法，克莉絲蒂也於1975年的作品《Curtain》中為其筆下的神探白羅劃上了句點。可惜的是白羅並沒有如福爾摩斯般的幸運，因為克莉絲蒂也於隔年隨著白羅的腳步離開了人世。
此外，克莉絲蒂的作品由於內容總是彌漫著英國鄉間較為悠閒的氣息(可能跟她第二次婚後總是與夫婿遠離人世的生活有點關系)，劇情的步調通常較為緩慢，再加上其作品往往偏重於人際間微妙的關系與精致的對話，因此可能有些讀者在剛開開始接觸克莉絲蒂的作品時，會難以接受。就筆者個人的經驗來說，建議在閱讀克氏作品時，最好是找個比較悠閒的時間與情境，放松自己的心情，比較容進入並享受其所建構的世界。
