《劍橋中國隋唐史》(589-906年)為《劍橋中國史》第3卷，論述隋唐時期的王朝歷史，作為《劍橋中國隋唐史》的上卷。原書於1979年出版，在一定程度上代表了國外隋唐史研究的水平。《劍橋中國隋唐史》(589-906年)的特點之一是，對隋唐史上有爭議的重要歷史人物和事件，提出了自己的看法，不乏新意，富有創見。特點之二是它填補了隋唐史研究中的不少薄弱環節，乃至空白。特別之三是它在論述隋唐史時，沒有局限於隋唐史本身，而是將隋唐史放在中國古代歷史，特別是從漢至宋的歷史長河中去考察。特點之四是它極其重視史料真偽和專題研究，並且廣泛吸取了各國的學術研究成果。
