在《龍與地下城：匕首谷》中，玩家可以單獨游戲，也可以和好友一同闖關，游戲中允許最多4名玩家一起游戲。游戲中將有大量的武器、技能、特技可以供玩家使用和修習。
匕首谷起初是一個快樂的群落，名叫快樂谷(Merrydale)。它的平靜和富饒在一次吸血鬼的襲擊中血腥地終止了。人們需要用木樁釘死自己變為不死生物的孩子，從此他們難以在谷中找到快樂，數年之後這個稱呼也就不再使用了。匕首谷，此名字是對矮人語中谷地原名發音的音譯，最終代替了快樂谷的名字。
