Edwin A.Abbott在1884年所著的經典故事《平地：多維的羅曼史》描述了“四邊形”（A.Square）的冒險經歷。四邊形是一個生活在二維世界裡的角色，在那裡居住著能夠活動的各種幾何圖形三角形、四邊形、五邊形等等。在故事接近尾聲的時候，即2000年的第一天，一個來自三維“空間地帶”的球形生物途徑平地(Flatland)，將四邊形帶離他的二維世界，向他展示出更大世界裡的三維面貌。當四邊形逐漸了解球形世界所展示的一切時，他斷定“空間地帶”本身可能作為一個很小的子空間而存在於一個更大的四維宇宙中。
