作者介紹：
克林頓·理查德·道金斯（Clinton Richard Dawkins，FRS，FRSL，）是英國演化生物學家、動物行為學家和科普作家，他同時也是當代最著名、最直言不諱的無神論者和演化論擁護者之一，有“達爾文的斗犬”（Darwin's Rottweiler）之稱。道金斯原為牛津大學科普教授，現任英國人文主義協會副主席，並擔任英國皇家學會會士、英國皇家文學會會士同英國世俗公會榮譽會員。
理查德·道金斯在他的第一本書《自私的基因》中提出迷因學說。他認為演化的驅動力不是個人、全人類或各個物種，而是“復制者”（replicator），所謂復制者既包括基因也包括迷因（是文化資訊傳承時的單位）。基因是細胞內決定某一生物體的性狀的遺傳物質。道金斯認為基因是我們的原動力：自私並且只對自己的生存和繁殖感興趣。他宣稱行為和生理機能可以由基因的永久性來解釋。我們只是自己基因的傳播媒介，是一套“生存機器”（survival machine），而這些“機器”的價值體現於是否能夠提高基因存活與繁衍的成功率。道金斯還解釋說即使那些看起來利他（altruistic）的行為都符合這個“自私”的模式。比方說，既然子女會有一半的基因和母親的相同，如果一位母親會犧牲自己的生命來保護她的孩子，那麼她的基因就會繼續存活下去。因此，她看來無私的行為實際只是基因（即“復制者”）利用生存機器確保自己的復制體更可能存活下去的一個策略。
