交互式白板是與電腦和投影機相連的大型交互式顯示設備。當投影機把電腦桌面內容投影到白板上面時，用戶可以通過特殊電子筆，手指或其它設備在白板界面上操作電腦。因此，本質上交互式白板是一種觸摸式電腦屏幕。其用途非常廣泛，比如：各類教育機構的教室，公司和工作團隊會議室，職業運動教練的培訓教室，電視台播音室等等。
基本配置由這三部分組成：白板——觸摸式操控原件，數字投影機，筆記本電腦或台式PC。其簡單工作原理是：電腦屏幕內容被投影到白板上，白板通過USB線與電腦連接，這樣用戶就能在白板屏幕上操作電腦。在白板上移動鼠標指針，就像用鼠標操作一樣。一些新技術提出把觸摸操控功能加到大屏幕LCD液晶顯示器上，如果價格降到適合的位置，最終會替代對數字投影機的需求。
大多數交互式白板並未內建揚聲器，但是通常配置揚聲器和放大器會增強多媒體效果。因此當教室安裝交互式白板時，揚聲器常常作為推薦配置。
使用配套的軟件，交互式白板可以簡單的作為電腦的輸入設備，用戶只需用手指或筆就能替代鼠標控制電腦操作。許多電腦軟件也能在交互式白板上正常的使用。

交互式白板是增強學生參與課堂教學的理想平台。由於其獨具的交互式特點，學生們都興奮和熱切的盼望被叫到白板面前向全班展示自己在課堂上學到的知識。通常對傳統課堂教學厭煩的學生們，也集中更多注意力於教師和教學主題，因為他們希望能使用到交互式白板。托尼是北愛爾蘭地區的一名物理教師，他這樣談到使用交互式白板的感受：“交互式白板非常棒，它能讓學生更積極的參與到課堂教學中。在以前的課堂上，學生並不願意被叫到在黑板上寫東西，而現在他們卻很積極地參與，甚至寫得更多、更完整。因為他們喜歡使用交互式白板。”

使用交互式白板能實時便捷的引入多種類型的多媒體資源，比如：視頻、圖片、動畫、網頁等。並可通過 “拖拽”與“評注”方式對這些材料進行針對性的組織、展示和控制，它使得教學素材的呈現更靈活。解決了過去單一電腦投影系統環境下，課件使用高度固化的問題，讓教學過程更具“生成性”。吉爾是沃爾多地區的一名四年級學習教師。在課堂上她使用交互式白板播放YouTube上的視頻來展示著名建築物，幫助學生學習幾何中的外形和角度的知識。她說到：“我常用拖拽功能來比較幾何體外形和角的大小，也常直接在圖片或視頻畫面上勾畫出建築物的外形和角度，非常直觀。”而在卡蕾斯塔老師的地理課上，交互式白板中展示的是谷歌地圖和谷歌地球。“用手來控制旋轉谷歌地球，看起來像科幻片，學生們興奮極了。”
另外根據不同的課程和主題，使用交互式白板配有各種顏色的筆，讓教學過程變得五彩缤紛，更有獨特的魅力。因為，實時運用顏色來改變字體和添加批注的方式強調重點，更能吸引學生注意力。
潛力的激發
據最近報道證實，交互式白板在課堂教學中的使用能大幅提高學生的成績。特別是對於學習有困難和成績落後的學生，更能激發他們的學習潛力。羅伊是一位高中教師，班上大都是有學習障礙的學生。通過在交互式白板上面使用互動教學游戲，他發現除了學習參與性提高之外，學生們的一些行為問題也得以減少。“與這類孩子的溝通更容易了，特別是一些有孤僻症的學生，同時更能吸引多動症孩子的注意力。”教師卡羅爾則認為交互式白板的批注和保存功能對成績落後的學生幫助更大，“方便的再現課堂教學內容能幫助學生們反復的學習和理解。”
