Photomatix是一款能夠調節圖片曝光度和通過多個曝光源生成HDRI－High Dynamic Range Image高動態范圍圖像。它能把多個不同曝光的照片混合成一張照片，並保持高光和陰影區的細節。打開在同一場景拍攝的不同曝光度的照片，選擇一個曝光混合方法，Photomatix Pro能讓你在6種聯合模式中選擇：平均＋5種曝光混合方法，每個方法都基於不同的算法。
Photomatix用來處理同一場景下不同曝光設置的照片。這些照片稱為包圍曝光照片，許多型號的相機都有自動包圍曝光功能。
但並非一定需要多張照片才能使用Photomatix。色調映射工具（Tone Mapping tool）也能用於48位TIFF文件，同樣適用於48位壓縮工具（Compression tool）。
另一技巧是使用從RAW文件解壓出來的不同曝光度的照片。這對於合並菜單下的曝光混合方式來說，特別是對自動高光和陰影（Highlight & Shadows - Auto）這一方式，處理的效果非常好。當然，從RAW文件能夠獲得的動態范圍是有限的，所以對於有明亮窗戶的室內景這樣的挑戰性場景，效果並不是很好。同時，必須指出的是，這樣的處理不適合於生成HDR圖像。
Photomatix提供兩種處理方式，把兩張或更多張不同曝光的照片形成一張更大動態范圍的照片。一種稱作曝光混合（Exposure Blending），通過“合並”菜單（combine）來進行。另一個叫HDR色調映射（HDR Tone Mapping），通過“HDRI”菜單來進行。
曝光混合是最容易理解的了。它將不同曝光的照片進行合並，將它們合並成一張高光和陰影都呈現細節的照片。
HDR色調映射處理包含兩步：第一步是把不同曝光的照片生成一幅HDR圖像；第二步是將生成的HDR圖像進行色調映射。第二步對呈現HDR圖像的高光和陰影的細節至關重要。
