傳統的 CAD 軟件都經歷了從二維設計到三維設計的變遷，但 Think3 公司的工業設計軟件 ThinkDesign 卻另辟蹊徑，從三維起步，讓普通人成為設計師，在幾分鐘內設計出漂亮的產品。這一切是如何實現的呢？讓我們聽聽 Think3 公司總裁 Joseph B. Costello 先生的說法。

在工業設計領域，Costello 先生頗具聲望，在加入 Think3 之前，他在 Cadence 設計系統公司擔任 CEO 兼總裁達10年之久，並成功地使 Cadence 成為全球領先的電子設計自動化（EDA）軟件和服務提供商。他認為在近30年中，CAD 行業最大的問題是缺乏創新。“從最初的二維繪圖到今天的 CAD 軟件，設計軟件行業在近30年的時間裡並沒有產生質的飛越，Think3 的目標就是要顛覆傳統的 CAD 軟件模式，為用戶提供方便丶易用丶符合人們使用習慣的設計工具，使任何一個普通人都能夠利用我們的軟件隨心所欲地設計新產品。” Costello 認為，今天的市場競爭環境對工業設計提出了很高的要求，從小家電丶日用品到汽車丶飛機，造型設計都是贏得市場的第一步。以汽車工業為例，在近十年的飛速發展歷程中，引擎沒有太大變化，但外型卻是日新月異，不同款式汽車之間的最大差別是外型丶裝飾，而不是內部結構，這就要求設計軟件能夠方便易用，使設計人員能夠快速應對市場需求的變化。另一方面，如何將藝術設計能力與制造能力結合起來，使設計出的造型能夠實際地被生產出來，成為真正的產品？這也是令傳統 CAD 軟件用戶頭疼的事情，目前，絕大多數產品生產線都是自動化的，這就帶來了一個無法回避的問題：越是藝術性高的設計，越難以制造。ThinkDesign 可以很好地解決這一問題，利用它，用戶可以很快設計出新的造型，並在此基礎上按照客戶的不同要求進行變形，在短時間內設計出數十丶數百丶數千個同類造型，並將最終設計結果自動輸入生產模型，完成整個設計和制造過程。Costello 強調，雖然在 Think3 之前也有一些著名的公司提供了三維設計軟件，但這些軟件最大的缺點是難以使用，用戶需要經過長時間的培訓才能掌握基本的設計技能，不便於非專業用戶使用。雖然中國用戶對 Think3 知之甚少，但在歐美市場上，Think3 已經贏得了眾多客戶的青睐，包括雷諾丶波音丶松下丶本田丶福特等公司都是 Think3 產品的重要用戶。
