About the SmoothWall GPL Project
The SmoothWall GPL project was founded in the summer of 2000, with Lawrence Manning as the principal code author and Richard Morrell acting as project manager. Other early contributors to the project included John Fautley and Tom Ellis, all of whom were living close to Southampton in the south of England. Their goal was to create a minimal Linux distribution that would convert a redundant Intel (or compatible) PC into a hardened Internet firewall device. The first version of SmoothWall was posted to sourceforge.org at the end of August 2000.
From these small beginning the project grew rapidly. Soon hundreds of copies were being downloaded every week; then it was thousands. Many more people joined the project team, bringing in new skills, knowledge and the ability to test SmoothWall on telecommunications systems worldwide. Richard sought every possible opportunity to publicise SmoothWall and soon SmoothWall was appearing on magazine cover CDs both in the UK and in many other countries. Even the project founders were amazed just how quickly SmoothWall became so popular. In the early months of the project new versions were released almost weekly, incorporating new features based on software contributions from around the world, along with support for an ever wider array of PC and networking hardware.
Version 0.9.9 was a major milestone in the history of the project. Released in September 2001, the team perceive it as the point where the project grew up , with a firewall that could be used by non-Linux people with all administration performed via its web browser based Graphical User Interface (GUI). Version 0.9.9 was the first version with a multi-language GUI, the inclusion of the Snort Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and support for ADSL modems and PPPoE connections.
In December 2003 a totally new version was released, SmoothWall Express 2.0. Even more than previous versions, it focussed on ease of use for people without a Linux background and little knowledge of computer networking. The software was complimented by totally new manuals, which provided much more comprehensive and higher standard documentation than was available for previous versions. By June 2004 there had been over 200,000 installations of Express. Helped by magazine cover disk distribution throughout the world that introduced Express 2 and Linux to a wide and diverse audience, average installation figures were exceeding 60,000 per month by September 2005, when the millionth installation was recorded.
To celebrate Smoothie s fifth birthday, the project team announced the first alpha test release of SmoothWall Express 3. Based on the latest Linux 2.6 kernel, it features a new open architecture designed to make it easy for software developers to produce their own security components for SmoothWall Express. This is intended to foster the development of new and improved open source software, to the benefit of the open source movement as a whole.
The initial design goals are still the foundation of SmoothWall Express today:
Be simple enough to be installed by home users with no knowledge of Linux
Support a wide variety of network cards, modems and other hardware
Work with many different connection methods and ISPs from across the world
Use a web browser to manage and configure the software
SmoothWall Express is intended for use by anyone from a home user to a systems administrator. It can run on almost any PC from a 486 upwards, which becomes a dedicated firewall appliance (the SmoothWall box). Apart from the PC, all that is required is an Internet connection and some simple networking equipment to connect the SmoothWall firewall to the rest of your local, private network.

我感覺一般用戶沒有必要用3.0商業版本。一般的個人、中小企業、網吧使用這個2.0就足以了。因為SmoothWall 2.0需要自己配置很低，所以你可以把你的報廢機子枝頭變鳳凰了。而且安裝十分簡單，一看就會。這個軟件是繼續Red hat9 linux操作系統下的，本身自帶Red hat9 linux簡版。
聲明：SW不是軟路由，是防火牆。NAT只是內帶的功能而已。但的確很強大。
2、下面我們來說說基本需要機子的配置情況，實際很隨便的。內存32m以上（建議用個64的因為如果抵抗攻擊的話還是要用到的）；光驅（安裝好後可一卸掉不用）；硬盤大於500m就可以了（建議使用2G，因為可能會保存一些日志什麼的）不要使用SCIS硬盤因為這個版本不支持；顯卡（隨便可以顯示就可以了）；CPU奔騰以上就可以了；顯示器、鍵盤安裝的時候需要，安裝好後可以卸掉。就這些可以了，隨隨便便的機子基本都可以支持的。這個就是這個軟件的最大優勢。
3、安裝方法可以采用2種，一個是光盤安裝，一個是網絡安裝。一般都會使用光盤安裝的。去官方(http://www.smoothwall.org/get/)下載smoothwall的光盤鏡像(ISO文件)，然後刻成光盤從光驅進行安裝。
