CentOS Overview
CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is developed by a small but growing team of core developers. In turn the core developers are supported by an active user community including system administrators, network administrators, enterprise users, managers, core Linux contributors and Linux enthusiasts from around the world.
CentOS has numerous advantages over some of the other clone projects including: an active and growing user community, quickly rebuilt, tested, and QA ed errata packages, an extensive mirror network, developers who are contactable and responsive, multiple free support avenues including IRC Chat, Mailing Lists, Forums, a dynamic FAQ. Commercial support is offered via a number of vendors.
CentOS是一個企業級Linux發行版，源自一家著名的北美企業版Linux提供商(其實是RedHat，只是這裡不能只說)提供的免費源代碼。CentOS是免費的。
其實為什麼有 CentOS？ CentOS 與 RHEL 有什麼關系？
RHEL 在發行的時候，有兩種方式。一種是二進制的發行方式，另外一種是源代碼的發行方式。
無論是哪一種發行方式，你都可以免費獲得（例如從網上下載），並再次發布。但如果你使用了他們的在線升級（包括補丁）或咨詢服務，就必須要付費。
RHEL 一直都提供源代碼的發行方式，CentOS 就是將 RHEL 發行的源代碼從新編譯一次，形成一個可使用的二進制版本。由於 LINUX 的源代碼是 GNU，所以從獲得 RHEL 的源代碼到編譯成新的二進制，都是合法。只是 REDHAT 是商標，所以必須在新的發行版裡將 REDHAT 的商標去掉。
REDHAT 對這種發行版的態度是：“我們其實並不反對這種發行版，真正向我們付費的用戶，他們重視的並不是系統本身，而是我們所提供的商業服務。”
所以，CentOS 可以得到 RHEL 的幾乎所有功能，甚至可能是更好的軟件。但 CentOS 並不向用戶提供商業支持，當然也不負上任何商業責任。
