Linux
廣義上講，Linux是一個電腦操作系統，它采用了Linux kernel (Linux系統中最核心部分) 作為內核，在此基礎上還有一些配套的應用和服務程序。
嚴格來說，Linux單指Linux kernel，即Linux內核。Linux kernel創始於1991年，創始者是現居美國的芬蘭人 Linus Torvalds。作者一開始就將這個系統的程序源代碼公布在網上，很多人通過網絡進行測試和提交修改。後來作者按照GNU GPL協議發布整個操作系統，並一直負責進行對kernel的維護。
目前Linux操作系統已經全面支持32位和64位多任務處理，並可以運行在大部分常見電腦以及嵌入設備上。

Linux 發行版
前面提到了，一個操作系統不能只有內核。很多Linux用戶或公司基於的Linux kernel，再加上一些其他的程序，所發布的Linux版本叫做Linux 發行版。
一般來說，各Linux發行版有不同的特色，而且都包含大量的軟件。
SUSE Linux
SUSE Linux 原來是德國的 SuSE Linux AG公司發行維護的Linux發行版，是屬於此公司的注冊商標。2004年這家公司被Novell公司收購。
廣義上SUSE Linux是一系列Linux發行版，目前有以下幾個版本：
SUSE Linux，針對個人用戶。2005年10月6日推出的SUSE Linux有三個版本 － OSS版 (完全地開放原始碼)、 試用版 (同時包含開放原始碼的程序及專屬程序如Adobe Reader、Real Player等，其實就是盒裝零售版，也可以免費下載，可以安裝在硬盤上，並且沒有使用限制或限期，但不含說明手冊及Novell提供的技術支援)及盒裝零售版。
Novell公司改進SUSE Linux，創建了一些企業用或高級桌面應用的Linux版本，包括：
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
Novell Open Enterprise Server
Novell Linux Desktop
等等
需要注意的是，Novell Linux Desktop 系列的新產品以後改稱 SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop。
