Preface to the third edition
For the third edition, coverage has been expanded by the
addition of some ten thousand updates to each side of the
dictionary. The principal sources of these updates have been:
the research into terminology and language change constantly
in progress at Oxford University Press; the use of sophisticated
filters to search Internet text for new words and for terms not
included in previous editions; the observations of the editors,
and of numerous external correspondents; the comments of a
team of readers based in Spanish- and English-speaking
countries.
In addition, access to the information contained in the
dictionary has been made even easier through a completely
new, color layout. Hundreds of cultural notes together with
boxes containing guidance on grammar and usage, now
included in the text, greatly extend the range of information
provided.
The editors hope that this revision will ensure that the Oxford
Spanish Dictionary will continue to provide the fullest and most
accurate description possible of today’s Spanish and English as
written and spoken on both sides of the Atlantic.

Preface to the first edition
This completely new Spanish and English dictionary is the
product of almost ten years of work by teams
of lexicographers based in Madrid and London, supported by
contributors and consultants in the USA and Latin America.
The resulting text provides modern idiomatic coverage, with
many new words and specialist terms, extensive treatment of
colloquial expressions, and thousands of example sentences to
show real language in action.
The editorial team has tried to ensure that this dictionary
reflects the Spanish and English spoken and written in the
1990s on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as covering a wide
range of vocabulary found in the literary heritage of both
cultures. We are confident that as a result this dictionary will
meet the needs of the present generation of translators,
students at all levels, teachers and business people.

Prólogo de la tercera edición
Para esta tercera edición se ha ampliado la cobertura de la
lengua con la incorporación de cerca de diez mil vocablos
actuales en cada lado del diccionario. La fuente principal de
éstos ha sido la investigación sobre cambios en la terminología
y en el lenguaje que constantemente se mantiene en la Oxford
University Press; la utilización de filtros altamente
desarrollados para buscar en textos de Internet nuevas
palabras y términos no incluidos en previas ediciones; la
contribución de los editores y de numerosos corresponsales
externos y los comentarios de un equipo de lectores basados en
países de habla espa ntilde;ola e inglesa.
El acceso a la información contenida en el diccionario se ha
hecho aún más fácil con un dise ntilde;o en color totalmente nuevo.
Además, se ha ampliado enormemente el ámbito de la
información con la inclusión, ahora en el texto del diccionario,
de cientos de notas culturales, conjuntamente con recuadros
que sirven de guía en áreas de la gramática y del uso.
Se espera, por parte de los editores, que con esta edición
revisada quede garantizado que el Gran Diccionario Oxford
continuará proporcionando la descripción más completa y fiel
posible del espa ntilde;ol y del inglés que se hablan y escriben en la
actualidad, tanto en Europa como en el continente americano

Prólogo de la primera edición
Este totalmente nuevo diccionario espa ntilde;ol e inglés es el fruto
de casi diez a ntilde;os de labor llevada a cabo por equipos de
lexicógrafos basados en Madrid y Londres con la colaboración
de corresponsales y asesores de los Estados Unidos y diversos
países latinoamericanos.
El texto resultante ofrece un tratamiento actualizado del inglés
y el espa ntilde;ol modernos, incluyendo numerosos vocablos de
nuevo cu ntilde;o y términos especializados así como una amplia
cobertura de la lengua coloquial y miles de ejemplos tomados
de la realidad.
Uno de los objetivos del equipo editorial ha sido que el
diccionario, además de incluir el vocabulario del patrimonio
literario de ambas culturas, sea un fiel reflejo de la lengua que
se habla y se escribe en la década de los 90, tanto en Europa
como en el continente americano. Tenemos plena confianza en
que, en consecuencia, la presente obra podrá satisfacer las
necesidades tanto del traductor como del docente, la persona
de negocios y el estudiante de cualquier nivel.
