歷經近兩年的等待，Sun終於在9月27日正式發布最新開源辦公軟件Star Office 8。作為微軟Office的強有力競爭者，StarOffice 8的發布一直倍受矚目，其在開源軟件中的地位將最終影響世界Office市場的格局。
StarOffice 8包括電子表格軟件、字處理、幻燈演示、繪圖工具以及數據庫等組件，可以在Windows、 Linux 和Sun三種平台上使用。在與微軟Office文檔格式的兼容性方面，StarOffice邁進了一大步。用戶可以直接輸出Office格式的文檔，而且還可以應用Office中的宏處理程序。
　　StarOffice 8支持“開放文件格式”（Open Document），這是微軟Office中所沒有的。開放文檔格式是一種日漸流行的開源方式，它更適合於電腦之間互享文檔。StarOffice是第一款支持開放文檔格式（OpenDocument）的商務軟件。
　　StarOffice最早始於20世紀80年代德國的一位少年撰寫了一套文字處理軟件：StarWriter，之後逐步擴展為Office 套裝軟件，包括試算表的StarCalc、電子簡報的StarImpress 等，並稱為StarOffice。

StarOffice 8 Education Licensing
Academic and Research institutions, including Primary and Secondary (K12) Schools, 2-and 4-year Colleges, and Universities, are eligible for a no-cost license of StarOffice 8. All you have to do to obtain the StarOffice 8 Software License and Entitlement is purchase at least one StarOffice 8 Enterprise Media Kit or download the software and click thru the license agreement on the Sun Software Download Center as described below.
The StarOffice 8 Software License and Entitlement gives your Educational Institution the ability to make StarOffice available for internal use. This means that your enrolled students, faculty, and staff may use the software on computers that you own, operate, or maintain direct control over. The StarOffice 8 Software License and Entitlement also grants permission for your institution to replicate StarOffice and distribute it to your constituents for their personal use.
