本作《地下世界》延續了《古墓麗影7》的劇情。勞拉會前往墨西哥南部，游戲場景非常宏大，游戲中設置了天氣系統。制作小組還對勞拉的動作做了改進，使動作更為流暢。勞拉與環境的互動性達到極高的水准。她會在泥地上留下腳印。但之後的雨水會將它們洗刷乾淨。而雨水同樣會對勞拉造成麻煩——她可能會因為石塊表面的水漬而滑倒。敵人的屍體和所有碎片都會保留下來，而不是像4代之後那樣消失掉。《地下世界》的音樂風格傾向於《周年紀念》——沒有不停歇的背景音樂，只在適當的觸發點才會出現音樂。
