《孤島危機2》是《孤島危機》的正統續作，游戲采用一代所使用引擎的升級版——CryENGINE 3所制作，並且二代將打破一代的PC獨占，將登陸主機平台。那自然就好考慮如何實現PC版畫面不僅不縮水，而且要比前作更好，而且還要兼顧主機平台的可實施性，這就要拜CryENGINE 3的強大功能所賜了，Crytek承諾他們能做到這點。
《孤島危機2》在游戲內容上與一代也有很大變化，已經從秘密的叢林作戰轉向了公開、大規模的現城

孤島危機2將不同於原作，原作中調查了神秘的隕石後，最後美軍艦隊全數擊沉，主角Nomad攜科學家海倫娜逃離之後，外星人入侵了世界的各個地點，並極大的改變了環境，幸存的人類不得不聯手起來對抗入侵者
孤島危機2的主戰場因此改變至紐約，同時更有神秘勢力Crynet出現，孤島危機2的世界將比起原作更加的凶險和刺激
EA還會發售游戲的限量版，限量版內容包括：
經驗獎勵：玩家進行多人游戲的時候有經驗值上的優勢，可以比其他玩家更早集齊全五種士兵的裝備。
全息成像儀：這是SCAR的附件將會為玩家創造一個全息圖像，迷惑敵人。
皮膚模擬器：玩家可以使用數碼迷彩皮膚，將自己的個性融入到游戲中的突擊步槍上面。
白金狗牌：這件特殊的狗牌是多人模式250件收藏品中的一件，用於區分敵我。

The world has been ravaged by a series of climatic disasters and society is
on the verge of total breakdown.  Now the aliens have returned, with a full

In New York, terrifying  alien invaders  stalk the  streets and a nightmare
plague strikes  down  the city's  myriad inhabitants with  brutal  epidemic
