　　電影改編，劇情講述了頭發花白的傑克·科沃基恩是美國密西根州一名備受爭議的醫生，在幾十年的職業生涯中，他親眼見過無數人為病痛所折磨，卻求生不得，求死不能。傑克堅信醫生的職責不僅是要盡最大努力醫治病患，更要設身處地為病人著想，滿足他們的需求，包括他們對死的渴望。因此，傑克嘗試幫對生活失去希望的病人施行安樂死。但是他的做法遭到了普羅大眾的一致反對，人們斥責他剝奪病患的生命，更送他“死亡醫生”的綽號。在這一過程中，只有姐姐瑪格（Brenda Vaccaro 飾）和少數幾個朋友默默支持著傑克的工作。
