《皇牌空戰：突擊地平線》將會是一個不同於以往系列的作品，該作將會是系列的一次重生。
游戲以2015 年的非洲為背景，故事敘述以“奪回非洲”為口號的反政府運動從東非蔓延至整個非洲大陸，當地政府向聯合國請求援軍以對抗沿海的反政府軍與海盜。北大西洋公約組織（NATO）會員國於是決定派遣聯軍，在非洲各地展開作戰。不過，反政府軍藉由現代化的軍力與因地利而生的游擊戰術，取得勢均力敵的局面，使戰局陷入膠著。

　　皇牌空戰：突擊地平線具有和系列過去的系統完全不同的爽快感和速度感。被擊墜的敵機碎片飛舞，就像身處空戰前線在體驗真實的戰爭。
　　充滿活力“交叉范圍攻擊”系統
　　該作的亮點是動作性與射擊性同時重視的“交叉范圍攻擊”系統。操作方法直觀，重視魄力表現的攝像機視角，像電影版充滿緊張感的戰斗樂趣。畫面中央的圓環會在敵機進入後進行自動瞄准和自動機槍攻擊。此外還可以操縱導彈和火箭炮等多彩的武器。
　　爭奪制空權的火熱“空中格斗”
　　互相爭奪有利位置和制空權，戰斗機同行之間的格斗。因為機槍和導彈等武器只能向機體的前方發射，必然會成為各自爭取繞到敵後的心理戰。通過空翻繞道敵機背後有時可以讓戰斗形勢立刻逆轉。其中的奧妙只有在玩了這部游戲之後才能領會。
