美國有一種考試中是比較特殊，叫“一般教育發展考試”（General Educational Development Tests，簡稱GED，也可以算是一種全美國承認的替代高中畢業生文憑考試。
如果通過考試就可以獲得High school diploma，等同美國高中畢業證書水平。獲得這個證書之後你可以免讀College的課程，不用修GE(General educational)的課程就可以直接入University讀書了。
中國內地暫時沒有考點也沒有報名點，香港有考點。
GED是英文機考，考試分兩部份：一是英語、文學，二是社會研究、科學和數學。
至於考試時間，隨時都可以考，考完25天後成績單就會寄出給你。
GED其實主要就是考英語閱讀和一些很簡單的數學，另外它要求你寫一篇作文，就是很簡單的作文，比如說，問你最喜歡的運動項目是什麼，然後再給出你喜歡這個運動項目的原因！！寫個100多個單詞就夠了。
這個考試比TOEFL簡單，考試要考兩天，每天從上午11點考到下午3點，每天四個小時，兩天一共八個小時。
